St. Francis Hospital

history

History of the Hospital

St. Francis Community Hospital is a faith based hospital, officially established on January 24, 2009, when it opened as a modest dispensary aimed at providing outpatient and antenatal care to underserved communities in Kasarani, Nairobi. It was founded by the Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi under the Archdiocese of Nairobi, driven by a mission to serve the spiritually, economically, and medically vulnerable.

Over the course of about nine years, the dispensary expanded considerably, achieving Level 3 hospital status in January 2009, and later evolving into a Level 5 teaching and referral hospital. Its growth included a bed capacity of 200 beds, modern diagnostic facilities, operating theatres, HDU and ICU, Paeditric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Maternity services, renal unit, and inpatient and outpatient departments.

True to its founding principles, St. Francis Community Hospital continues to prioritize community engagement through monthly medical outreach camps, support programs for orphans, vulnerable children, and HIV-positive patients under its CBHC program, and specialized clinics including hypertension, diabetes, and physiotherapy services. Its mission—centered on quality, affordable, Christ centered care—supports its vision of being a preferred regional provider, with active participation in public health initiatives like Universal Health Coverage.
